A Perfect Match
Chapter Two
Whereâs Kevin hiding out? Heather wondered.
She scraped the supper dishes and loaded them into the dishwasher. Quickly, she wiped the table clean and shook the place mat over the sink. Then she hurried upstairs to look for her older brother.
Stopping in the hallway outside his bedroom door, she could see Kevin sitting at his desk. Probably doing homework. When he was off the ice, he usually had his nose in a book.
âKnock, knock,â Heather said softly.
âDoorâs open,â Kevin said without turning around.
She smiled. âYou probably knew I was standing out here, right?â
âBefore you ever said a word.â He turned and grinned. âThatâs what happens when you skate, breathe, and think like your little sister for six years.â
She smiled. âDoing geometry?â
âAlways.â
âJust wondered if you want to take a walk,â she said, hoping she could keep up her nerve.
âNow?â
âSure, why not?â She hoped he wouldnât refuse.
Closing his math book, he got up. âItâs dark out . . . and snowy. You sure about this?â
âWe could walk down to the Oo-La-La Café and get some ice cream,â she suggested. âIâm buying.â
Kevinâs face broke into a wide smile. âWell, if thatâs the case, weâre outta here. Letâs see . . . Iâll have a double banana split with extra ice cream and tripleââ
âHey, slow down. Who said anything about pigging out?â
âAw, câmon.â He pretended to sulk, playing along.
âYou know what Coach says about eating bad stuff,â she reminded him. âIce cream once in a while, and then only in moderation.â
âHey, itâs one thing to get lectured from Coach, but do I have to hear this from my skating partner, too?â From his emphasis of the word partner, she wondered if he suspected something.
âBetter ask Mom and Dad if we can go out,â Heather said as they hurried down the stairs. They stopped by the coat closet in the entryway.
âDadâs working with Tommy on his rocket project,â Kevin said, reaching for his jacket.
âIn the garage?â she asked.
Kevin nodded. âI think Mom and Joanne are out there, too. Last time I checked, they were.â
Heather followed him out to the garage, where they found the rest of the family wearing coats and scarves, helping Tommy with his homeschool project. A giant red rocket.
âIs it okay if Heather and I walk down to the mall for some ice cream?â Kevin asked their dad.
âIsnât it kind of late?â Dad said, glancing at his watch. He was a tall, thin man with the same blond hair as Heather and Kevin.
âWeâll be home by eight,â Heather volunteered.
Dad looked at Mom, who was nodding her head that it was all right. âOkay, but donât be gone long.â
âAnd go easy on the sweets,â Mom said as they headed outside. âRemember, you have practice tomorrow.â
âFour-thirty comes so early,â Heather muttered.
Kevin chuckled. She could see his breath as they walked toward the sidewalk. âYouâd think after all these years, getting up before the chickens would be easy,â he said.
Heather watched the glow from the streetlights. They dotted the narrow street, three to a block, and the effect against the snow reminded her of their recent trip to Colorado Springs.
